You may have seen the inspiring video “Johnny the Bagger”. It’s the true story of how one young man with Down Syndrome changed the experience of grocery shoppers in a simple but profound way. You can watch it here.
This video spoke to me powerfully. With imagination and heart we can go that extra mile to show gratitude to our clients.
Here are some suggestions for demonstrating our appreciation as personal historians.
- a framed poster of the front cover of your client’s book or DVD.
- birthday and holiday greetings.
- a small box of heirloom family cookies along with the recipe.
- a jar of your homemade preserves.
- a copy of the APH Anthology “My Words Are Gonna Linger: The Art of Personal History”.
- a gift certificate from a local bookstore.
- a donation in your client’s name to a “memory” or “literacy” related charity such as the Alzheimer’s Association or Reading Is Fundamental.
- a box of nostalgia note cards like those from A Step Back.
What are some of the special ways you say “thank you”?

Dan,
I mail both Christmas and Birthday cards to earlier clients (lots on their way to Perth this month), wishing them a memorable time. I believe that keeping in touch reminds them of their story at celebratory times they may spend with extended friends and family which sometimes leads to a word of mouth referral – the BEST kind of marketing! Bon Noel, my friend.
@Annie Payne. Thanks, Annie. All the very best to you this holiday season!
